Oh Max! Why does my heart yearn for you everytime I'm in Vancouver. This placed used to be related to the Max Noodle house in Hong Kong, however, they are no longer related.
Their wontons is what keeps me coming back. Yes, I literally booked a flight just for their wontons and dumpling noodle soup. I believe they have one of the best wontons and dumpling noodle soup outside of Hong Kong. Just biting into it, brings all the goodness to your tummy. Their beef brisket was also very tender. Their fried chicken wings was pretty good, and had the right amount of batter. Their veggies were a little bit expensive but it was good portion for two people to share.
This place is Cash only and if i had enough cash i would've ordered more! They do have a small parking lot they share among other stores, it's best to come before the dinner rush if you want parking! -

The portions are small so that allowed me to sample several of their items - pork sauce noodle soup on the side, won ton noodles, and liver congee. The star here is clearly the won ton noodles. They are thinner noodles than usual- think angel hair, but you can tell after the first bite that the noodles are just at another level than the others.
The liver congee was great too. Thick porridge that was well seasoned with liver cooked just right. Nothing like the rubbery liver most places serve up.
And because portion was not huge I was able to go try dessert elsewhere! -

So many authentic Chinese food in Vancouver, I was really craving egg noodle soup so turned to Yelp to help me out. The average rating is 3.5 stars, but I don't really go for ratings when in Vancouver because the legit places usually get ding for service, but produces great food. They are known for their wonton soups here, I got the braised beef/tendon noodle soup. The beef was really tender, so tender it melts in your mouth. The bowl is pretty small though, smaller than your standard noodle soup bowls. It was enough food, but I wished it was served in a bigger size bowl even if you don't add anymore food, it was just really hard to grab everything out of the bowl without it spilling out and I couldn't place many Chinese donuts in it or it will fall out.
Overall, our meal for 2 bowls & a side order of Chinese donut was super cheap and it was in Canadian dollar also so that makes our meal ridiculously cheap for the value we got.
Tell me about your experience if you've been here or is going to after reading this review:) -

Reminiscent of the hey day of HK family cuisine with the modest won ton noodle soup.
Max has been around in Richmond for over 30 years. When I was a kid, we mocked its puny-sized servings. Who would eat won ton soup out of a large coffee cup! Well I don't have that college guy appetite anymore and the portion seems just right for me. Prices also have stayed fairly consistent - what was expensive is now a really good deal.
Food: It is all about the noodles. They are thin and al dente - the very best IMO this side of the Pacific. Flavour it with won ton and braised beef brisket and it is heaven! The soup is packed with strong prawn flavours, which I like (but my son, not so much). There are other things on the menu but I can't seem to go beyond the won ton soup. This is my comfort food.
Service: Genuine HK "dive" restaurant - loud, curt, but really efficient.
Why eat here: Max is the real deal. The quality of its won ton noodle soup is so very close to those celebrity eateries in HK where people queue for hours. And you get the real HK service to boot! -

I'm seeing a few angry reviews about this place. To understand this place and why it is the way it is, you must understand culture. This place is authentic to its Hong Kong roots (which makes the food so good). But, in its authenticity, Hong Kong noodle bowls are traditionally served in smaller bowls. This is why the portions are relatively small, and could cause confusion & annoyance in some customers. And yes, it is a little pricey ($7-9) for its size. But now you know what you're paying for, and why you're paying for it. Another culture thing - most Chinese places in Richmond only accept cash. Now you know!
The food is authentic Hong Kong food. The noodles are good, the broth is light yet tasty, the wontons have great smooth yet chewy texture. They do it here well. (Just a tip: if you're eating wonton noodle for the first time, you may not like their thin egg noodles because of the weird after feeling. I suggest you replace it with the thin flat rice noodle instead!)
I'm giving it an objective 3/5 because it IS pricey for its portion, and service isn't always great - the servers could be seen as rude (but that's to be expected because it's just the culture, again). So if you're coming here, know that you're getting good food, but you'll have to accept its flaws with it & decide whether to overlook them or not.
